APPLYING YOUR VINYL DECALS

Apply vinyl decals only to clean, smooth surfaces. The cleaner the surface, the better your decal will adhere. Decals may be removed, but doing so will destroy the decal. Application to surfaces colder than 40°F is not recommended unless the surface can be heated slightly with a hair dryer before application. Likewise, surfaces warmer than 90°F are more difficult to apply to, since the adhesive welds instantly, making it difficult to remove bubbles.

Cleaning the surface

The surface must be as clean as possible, with no oily films. Clean the surface with an appropriate cleaner, then wipe afterward with water or an alcohol solution to remove any cleaner left on the surface.

Applying Small decals

For decals 3 inches or smaller. Before application, place the decal on a flat surface and remove the white backing sheet, leaving the decal attached to the clear “transfer” sheet. Small decals (less than 3 inches) can be applied directly by carefully peeling off the release paper from the back of the decal, affixing the decal, applying slight pressure to smooth, and removing the transfer tape. Use caution as once the decal makes contact with the surface, it is stuck and you can’t reposition it.

Applying Larger Decals

For decals up to 8 inches. Align the decal where you wish to apply it, and tape it to the surface using masking tape, along one side. Lift the other end away from the surface, then carefully peel the backing paper away. Then, starting at the taped edge, smoothly apply the decal to the surface from the center out. Using a squeegee or similar flexible object can make this task much easier. Credit cards can be used, but take care with the sharp edges. Once applied, carefully peel away the transfer sheet. Do not use a squeegee or such directly on the vinyl after the transfer tape has been removed.

Peeling away the backing

Peel slowly! Often when peeling away the backing, the vinyl will attempt to stick to the backing instead of the transfer tape. If this happens, just push the tape back down on that area, press with a finger, and try again.

Removing bubbles

If you get a bubble under the vinyl, use a pin or a needle to make a small hole at one edge of the bubble, then gently push the bubble toward the hole with your finger or a smooth, slick object.

Removing "tunnels"

If you get a wrinkle or tunnel under the vinyl, you can use a very sharp knife, and carefully cut the edge of it. Then smooth the remaining vinyl over it. The vinyl will bond to itself just fine.

Peeling away the transfer sheet

Peel slowly! Especially on cooler surfaces, the vinyl adhesive may not be fully bonded yet. If the vinyl comes away with the transfer sheet, just gently push the material back down, and apply pressure with a finger, then try again.

Bonding time

Bonding time depends on the surface temperature. The cooler the surface, the longer it takes. Applying to surfaces that are too cold may result in the adhesive not bonding at all, which may result in peeling or the decal falling off. If the surface is on the cooler side, be sure not to disturb the decal for a few hours after applying.
