About Spikes on Collars

Cautions

While spiked collars these days are primarily for show and making a statement, the spikes used on our collars are quite sharp. Care should be taken when using these collars on your dog. If your dog is highly active and tends to bump into people, spiked collars might not be a good idea. We highly recommend that spiked collars only be worn when your dog is supervised, preferably on lead.

History

Spiked collars were primarily used during the middle-ages as a means of protecting valuable hunting dogs when pursuing dangerous predators like wolves and bear. Such collars might be a simple leather band surrounded by spikes up to four inches in length. Or they might consist of a wide collar constructed of metal links with the ends bent upward and sharpened, presenting multiple rows of sharpened ends two or more rows wide. The point of these collars was to protect the vulnerable necks of the dogs against other predators.
